Still There Amid the Storm

How would you respond if everything you had was suddenly taken away?

Imagine waking up one morning with a home, family, possessions, and everything you’ve worked for. By the end of the day, it was all gone. That’s what happened to Job. There’s having a bad day, and then there’s having a day like Job experienced.

In a matter of hours, disaster after disaster came crashing into Job’s life. Job 1:13–19 records the heartbreaking details. One messenger hadn’t even finished delivering the bad news before another arrived with more. It is difficult to imagine the grief Job must have felt, yet what Job did next is remarkable.

The Bible says:

“Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship” (Job 1:20).

Notice that Job grieved. He didn’t pretend everything was okay, but in the middle of his grief, Job worshiped. He said:

“I came naked from my mother’s womb,
and I will be naked when I leave.
The Lord gave me what I had,
and the Lord has taken it away.
Praise the name of the Lord!” (
Job 1:21).

Job recognized something important: everything he had ultimately came from the Lord. This understanding didn’t make his loss painless. It didn’t mean he understood why these things were happening, but even when his circumstances changed dramatically, Job’s relationship with God remained.

Most of us will never experience a day like Job’s, but we will have difficult days. We will face unexpected phone calls, disappointing news, financial struggles, broken relationships, health challenges, and circumstances we never saw coming. When those moments arrive, how will we respond?

We can grieve. We can hurt. We can admit that we don’t understand. Even as we do, we can still turn toward the Lord.

When life changes, remember that God hasn’t changed, and when you face a difficult moment, let your first response be to turn toward the one who has been faithful through every season.
