Fear has gripped many hearts. Every day, headlines remind us of problems around the world. Uncertain times, troubling news, and personal struggles can easily leave us wondering what tomorrow will bring. It’s no surprise that many people are wrestling with fear.

If that’s where you find yourself today, you’re not alone. Even some of the Bible’s greatest heroes experienced fear, and we can find much encouragement in their response.

David knew what it was like to live through frightening seasons. He faced enemies, uncertainty, and moments when his life was in danger. Yet in the middle of those circumstances, he wrote these words:

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 56:3-4)

There are several encouraging truths in David’s words.

First, David says, “When I am afraid…” He doesn’t pretend fear doesn’t exist. Fear is a natural human emotion. Even a man described as being after God’s own heart experienced it. Feeling afraid doesn’t mean your faith has failed. It means you’re human.

Second, notice what David does with his fear. He doesn’t allow it to control him. Instead, he brings it to God and chooses to trust Him. David reminds us that faith is not the absence of fear—it is choosing to trust God in the middle of it.

Finally, David asks, “What can mere mortals do to me?” His focus shifts away from the size of his problems and back to the greatness of his God. He remembers that God is greater than every circumstance he faces.

That same promise belongs to us today. Isaiah 41:10 says,

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Fear may knock at the door of your heart, but it doesn’t have to move in. Like David, we can choose to place our trust in the One who is stronger than every uncertainty we face. The circumstances around us may not change overnight, but our confidence can remain steady because God never changes.

If fear has been weighing on your heart today, make David’s prayer your own: “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.” That’s not just a comforting thought—it’s a decision that can anchor your heart no matter what tomorrow brings.
