Have you ever found yourself in the valley of broken promises?

“I will always love you.”

“Till death do us part.”

“I’ve got your back. You don’t have to worry about this round of layoffs.”

We’ve all heard promises like these. Words that seem certain to us suddenly mean very little. Many of us have walked through the valley of broken promises more than once.

Someone promised.
We believed.
And then the promise was broken.

Going through this can be devastating, and cause us to wonder if we can believe anyone. In these moments, the Bible reminds us there is one whose promises never fail. Scripture reminds us God keeps His promises.

Psalm 12:6 says, “The Lord’s promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over.”

Think about that for a moment. God’s promises aren’t empty words. They aren’t made in the heat of the moment and forgotten when circumstances change. His promises are pure. They can be trusted.

Numbers 23:19 reminds us, “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?”

Look throughout Scripture and you’ll find God with a perfect record of keeping his promises.

• He promised Abraham that he would become the father of a great nation, and he did.
• He promised Israel a land of their own, and he brought them into Canaan.
• He promised to provide food for his people in the wilderness, and manna appeared.

Again and again, God proved that when he speaks, he can be trusted.

Paul put it this way in 2 Corinthians 1:20, “For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding ‘Yes!’”

Hebrews 10:23 gives us this encouragement, “Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.”

That matters when life gets difficult.

• The promise you cling to in the middle of the night is still true.
• The promise you hold onto when you don’t know what tomorrow will bring is still true.
• The promise you rely on when your circumstances seem to contradict your faith is still true.

God has never made a promise He couldn’t keep.

People may disappoint us. Circumstances may change. The future may look uncertain. But God remains faithful.

So when you find yourself standing in the valley of broken promises, don’t let the broken promises of people convince you that God will break His promises, too. He won’t.

Open Scripture. Find His promises. Hold onto them. Let them remind you that your circumstances don’t get the final word. God does, and…

• His promises are true.
• His Word is trustworthy.
• His faithfulness never fails.

When everything else feels uncertain, you can still stand on the promises of God.
