If you could erase one moment from your life, what would it be? Most of us can think of a decision we regret, words we wish we could take back, or a season we would rather forget. The past has a way of reminding us of our failures, whispering that we’ll never be more than our mistakes. Thankfully, that’s not what God says.
Paul writes, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Ephesians 1:7).
Notice he says we have redemption—not that we might earn it someday or hope to receive it if we’re good enough. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, forgiveness is available to everyone who places their faith in Him.
The word redemption paints a beautiful picture. It means to be bought back or set free by paying a price. We were trapped by sin, unable to rescue ourselves. Jesus paid the price we could never pay by giving His own life so that we could experience forgiveness and freedom.
Paul also reminds us this forgiveness comes “in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” God doesn’t forgive reluctantly or sparingly. His grace is…
- Abundant.
- Greater than our worst failure.
- Deeper than our greatest regret.
- Sufficient for every person who comes to the Lord.
Many believers know they are forgiven, yet continue living as prisoners of guilt. We replay old mistakes, question whether God could still use us, or believe we’ve gone too far. The cross says otherwise. When Jesus forgives, he doesn’t simply cover our sins. He removes our guilt and gives us a new identity. We no longer have to let yesterday define today.
As you begin this day, thank God for His amazing grace. Your past may explain part of your story, but it doesn’t determine your future. In Christ, you have been redeemed, forgiven, and set free. Live today in the freedom He purchased for you.
